My now deceased father, James Stilwell, served in the 862nd from England across Europe. He was a 1LT at the time and after serving 22 years, 8 months retired as a MAJ CE AUS in 1961. If anyone is interested I have his records, orders, after action reports, etc. He was detached for awhile and rode as an aerial observer/photographer in the nose of P-38s. His aircraft was shot down and he was wounded and returned to his unit.

He married my mother in May 1945, an English LACW RAF, whom he had met at the train station in Claxton while on leave. THis was before going into Europe on D+5 I think.

I have an account of an interesting incident that occurred when he went to visit his cousin, a 1LT in a nearby infantry unit. Apparently the Company CO, a CAPT thought that my father "wasted" food when dumping food from his mess kit into the GI can. He was reprimanded and had to write a report to explain his actions. I have that report.

In any case, if some contemporaneous record of the unit is desired let me know and I will copy what I have....

I have added your father to the unit roster ....

You seem to have a lot of very interesting information. If you'd like to put together a page for your father, I'd be happy to get it up on the site.

Here are some samples
