Call 440-943-2700 and speak with Joe.

My dad served in the 862nd Engineer Aviation BN from '43 - '46 and I called Joe (Chariman of 862nd). He informed me they are having a big reunion in Las Vegas Sept 12th - 16th. He can send you the newsletter.

I hope this helps.

I have recently come across some photos (long story) indicating that my father served in this unit from maybe late 45 til early 47. I too am on the hunt regarding the unit. I have contacted Sherl Hasler and intend to call Joe DiFranco also. Here is a picture, just as a teaser...

I would love to get a copy of the unit logo, hard to tell for sure from the picture but it looks pretty cool.

Hi Jeff. Glad you found us. Sherl and Joe are definitely the right guys to reach. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make the reunion this year but maybe next year's.

The insignia you have is the "Flying Dozer." It was used as an unofficial insignia for almost all the engineer aviation battalions. Here's a copy.

The 862nd EAB did have a distinctive insignia but it wasn't approved until after World War II ... in 1952.

From around April 1944 to the end of the war, the 862nd EAB wore the insignia for the IX Engineer Command (as did all the units). It was the official insignia for all units in the command. That's the insignia you see at the upper left of this sceen.

I look forward to hearing more about your father. Send me his name and information so I can add him to the roster.

David

I wonder if I have given some faulty informtion. I posted that William Ong served with the 832nd EAB, but after reading his story in "The Yanks Are Coming" I see that he was in the 862nd EAB. and later served with the 87th Infantry. My apologies. I must have misunderstood his grandson.

I believe Bill Ong is the man who gets the guys together each year for the reunion. I know I helped him address and stamp envelopes to quite a few veterans.

Welcome Cornman. Glad you found the site.

I've added your father the unit roster.

Hopefully someone will see you post and remember your father. Please let me know if you'd like to create a page for your father and I'd be happy to help.

David
