The lastest thing I've been playing with is sending digests of posts out of the Forums. It started as a search to set the system up so that anytime someone started a new topic or responded to a topic, that I'd get notified. I didn't want folks to ask a question and not get an answer.

I found a nice little extension to the forums that let folks "subscribe" to a forum or forums and have regular emails sent out with a short synopsis of any new posts. This would be a great way to get notified when I add something new to the "What's New" topic. Here's how to set this up for yourself ....

There are two ways to do this ...

1) You'll notice a little button at the top, right next to "Usergroups", that says "Digests". If you click on that you'll be taken to the page that will let you subscribe to a Forum. You can also set things like how often you want digests sent, etc. Just select the Forums of interest (or be like me and select them all!!) :D One thing, you have to be registered to use the digests ... the system has to know where to send the email!

2) The other is to just go to the page directly ...

Let me know how you like this, if you find it useful or if you have any problems.

I need to apply this feature to the new installation of the forums so digests are currently not available. I don't think this is a real issue since I don't believe anyone was actually using them but me.

Didn't know you used them. Since I know there is another user, I'll bump that project back up on the priority list.

Sure, I'd like to see the photos. You could post them in the forum if you like or just send them to me and I'll add them.

Okay Denis. I think I have it working. Right now I only have the digest mailing run four time a day but let's see if it works and then I'll bump up the frequency.

The modification I've been using to send regular digests of messages has made it very difficult to update the forum for new security needs. I had to reinstall the modification and anyone who used to have subscriptions will need to redo them.

If this continues to be a problem, I'll just have to take the Digest feature offline.

Actually, I just saw a list of features that will be in the next version of the forum software I use and it looks like it will have its own way to track messages. I ALWAYS prefer using the features built into the software.

Hopefully this will make it easier to keep the board up to date.
